Why Family Research?

  • We are all impacted and shaped by the joys and hardships that our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents endured. As we discover our family, we begin to understand and build compassion for prior generations, leading to a broader view of our family and ourselves.

  • Uncovering a family history is a combination of science and detective work. The result can be inspiring and life-changing.

Michele Jeglum

Owner and Principal Genealogist

Mining for ancestors is a genealogy and research firm based in Fairbanks, Alaska. Our focus is on research in the mining communities that attracted our ancestors to risk it all and come to the United States in search of a better life. Genealogist Michele Jeglum is a product of these immigrants. Her family immigrated from Cornwall, Germany, Italy, Scotland, and Finland to work in the mining industry, eventually settling in Butte, Montana. Her first interest in genealogy began in fifth grade with a school project. When she started asking questions about where her family was from, it sparked a life-long passion. Michele is an educator, holding both a master’s degree in education and a certificate in Genealogic Research from Boston University. Michele is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and the National Genealogical Society. At Mining for Ancestors, we assist our clients with projects ranging from searching for specific documents to building an entire family history. We also specialize in restoring old family photos.
